Chrome extension
A Chrome workflow recorder that asks for as little as possible
The extension does one job: capture clicks and screenshots in the tab you choose, only while you’re recording, and hand the draft to the editor.
Chrome Web Store listing: not yet published
The extension is in review / preparation. Until it’s listed you can load it from the source package in developer mode (steps below). We will update this page when the listing is live.
Permissions, in plain language
- Read and change data on the current tab when you click the extension (activeTab) — this is how screenshots and clicks are captured. It applies only to the tab you start on, only after you press Start, and Chrome revokes it when that tab moves to another website.
- Scripting — adds the click listener and the “Recording” badge to that tab.
- Storage — keeps your unfinished recording on your computer so it survives a crash.
- screenmate.ai — lets the editor on this site import drafts from the extension. No other website can communicate with it.
- Optional: all websites — only if you turn on “Record across websites without interruptions” in the popup. Chrome will show its own warning when you do. It’s used only during a recording and you can switch it off again.
What it never does
- Record anything when you are not recording.
- Record keystrokes, typed text, passwords, or form values. It notes which field you typed in, nothing more.
- Store page addresses with tokens or session parameters in them.
- Upload anything by itself. Screenshots leave your computer only when you choose to save or share a guide in the editor.
- Hold any API keys or account secrets.
Screenshots can still contain sensitive information on screen — that’s why the review step and the redaction tool exist, and why we don’t claim any automatic detection catches everything.
Install in developer mode (until the Web Store listing is live)
- Download the extension package (
screenmate-extension-chrome.zip) and unzip it. - In Chrome open
chrome://extensions, turn on Developer mode (top right). - Click Load unpacked and choose the unzipped folder.
- Pin ScreenMate to the toolbar. The shortcut Alt+Shift+S opens it.
Developer-mode extensions show a reminder banner in Chrome from time to time; that’s expected and goes away with the store version.
Supported browsers
Google Chrome 116 or newer on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. Other Chromium browsers that support Chrome extensions (for example Edge or Brave) generally work but are not tested. Mobile browsers can read guides but cannot record.
